My husband
and I are going Christmas shopping today. This also happens to be his birthday so
we're throwing the next Hobbit movie in there as well to make it a little less
painful for him. If you are like me, you
knew Christmas was the 25th of December (same as last year) but let
it sneak up on you anyway. It happens to
the best of us. So, here are a few
things I found which have already taken a bite out of my gift shopping. There are deals to be had!
ay.
My son wants
the Hungry Hungry Hippos game for Christmas.
So, my husband and I have been searching for a good deal. I feel safe in talking about my son's
Christmas gifts because he is four and cannot read yet, and even if he could, I
don't think his Mom's blog would be high on his reading list. I love to compare prices online. Sometimes, a store's website has sales, while
other times you can get the item cheaper if you drive to the store. But it is a quick way to decide which store
has the best price for the product you want.
In this case, it was plastic, marble-eating hippo heads. I looked first at Walmart.com. Their price: $14.25. Meijer had it for $19.87
online. Amazon's price: $19.95. I also decided to try Kohl's. Why Kohl's?
In the mail, I had just received the anticipated Kohl's ad, and better
yet, the $10 discount card on the back of the ad booklet. Oh, how I love those cards!
A few years
ago, when I received my first $10 discount card in the mail, I was
skeptical. For example, typical discount
cards will give you $10 off when you purchase $50 or more (regularly-priced
items only, blah, blah, blah.) But this
little card is different. If you have
received one in the mail and taken time to look it over, you too know the
excitement. For a budget girl like me,
this was a great deal - $10 off $10 or
more (including marked down items)! I
get these cards in the mail three or four times a year. I'm not sure if they're sent only to people
who live close to a Kohl's, or people on their mailing list. If you don't receive them, try to go online
and sign up to receive their ads in the mail.
This may work for you. Now the
$10 card has some exclusions but for the most part it is straight forward. Spend $10+ and get $10 off.
Now, the
trick to saving money is to spend as little over $10 as you can, or else buy an
item that you really need or want, so that you save $10. My husband and I usually get two cards in the
mail at the same time. You are allowed
the use of one card person. This means even more savings when my husband and I
shop together because we each use our cards.
Be sure to follow the terms and conditions. We have purchased pajamas and clothes for our
sons, toys (for birthdays and Christmas) and kitchen items using these cards –
all for almost no money!
So, back to
my hippo story. I found the game in
their store for $28.99. However, their
toys are usually marked down in stores.
This was no exception. Kohl's had
the game at 50% off. That, along with
my $10 off card brought my son's gift to only $4.50 before tax! This is much lower than any other price
around. Also, I found a Disney game for
my niece's birthday. With the discount
and $10 card (as I stated, my husband uses one and I use one), the total came
to only $2.50! Not bad for a birthday
present.
Check out
Kohl's. I hear you can save even more
using their Kohl's card (my husband and I don't use charge cards so I don't
have any experience with that), but they
also have other sales and promotions from time to time. At first glance, Kohl's wouldn't have been my
first, second, or even third choice for this item (judging by online prices). But with a little research, I was able to
save a lot of money!
Until next
time, keep your eyes open, because savings abound!
